Here's something from our humanitarian trip to Lesvos with students from the Lycee Franco Hellenique Eugene Delacroix. This was an amazing experience, we tried to offer as much help as we could to the two refugee camps (Kara Tepe, Morias), we had the chance to speak with many people there, who had lived a real ordeal but still welcomed us with a big smile !
Lesbos continues to struggle with the rising number of refugees. The island is not prepared for the approaching cold spell, and conditions in the camps are catastrophic. Resistance is growing – among migrants and locals alike. Despite the EU-Turkey refugee deal, the Greek island of Lesbos has seen a surge in the number of new arrivals in recent weeks. Ahmed Al-Majeed is one of them. The 27-year-old ran a bookshop in his native Iraq, before he was forced to flee from so-called Islamic State. Two months ago, he reached Lesbos. He says refugees like him are being treated like animals. The island’s official refugee camp is bursting; its facilities are anything but hygienic. Ahmed lives next door in a makeshift camp, but things are not much better there. Many locals are also fed up with the si...
Papyrology expert, Margaret Mountford goes in search of the truth behind the legend of Sappho - the most controversial writer of the ancient world and the first authentic woman’s voice in western history. The mysterious discovery of a lost papyrus containing the words to songs unheard for seventeen hundred years sends Margaret on a journey to explore the truth about Sappho. Was she indeed the first lesbian, a priestess, prostitute, a stern schoolmistress or an aristocratic lady of leisure as readers over the centuries have variously alleged? We ask how each generation’s view of the archetypal liberated woman of letters tells us as much about us and our fears and concerns as it does about her. If you were moved to help, visit http://CantDoNothing.org to find out easy ways you can share your time, money, or voice! I went to Greece to vacation with my family and stayed to volunteer with the refugees. Millions of refugees seek one thing we all take for granted: a home. While many of us are aware of the plight of the refugees, there has been very little focus on what can be done to help. What you do know is that you #CantDoNothing. Choose to share your voice, money or time to make a massive change in the world. Step 1: Take a photo with your #CantDoNothing sign or film a video to share how you are choosing to help. Step 2: Post your video or photo to your social outlet and tell us why you #CantDoNothing Step 3: Tag 3 of your friends to do the same and join the movement! Giant...
(3 Nov 2015) European Union border agency Frontex has begun piloting a new process to speed up the registration of migrants on the Greek island of Lesbos. It is trialling a so-called “hotspot” inside the Moria camp where newly arrived migrants and refugees are identified before continuing their journey across Europe to apply for refugee status. The EU chose to launch the programme on Lesbos, because it is on the front-line of Europe's migrant crisis. The island has been stretched to the limit with more than 300,000 migrants processed here this year, more than three times the island's population — and most have landed in the past six weeks. Francisco Ramos, a soft-spoken Spanish policeman, is currently in charge of running the new programme, which is housed in a converted freight cont...
